Envelope Pillow Covers. No Sewing!

How to make envelope pillow covers. The best part, you don’t need to sew anything!

My abuelita is a wise, independent and powerful woman. It was not always like that. Circumstances in her life made her what she is right now. When my abuelito left her (with 12 kids!), she was heartbroken. She cried for days, but when she realized she had no job, no money and no one to ask for help, she took what little money she had left, bought a few pieces of fabric and started selling them door to door to buy food for her kids. She was an entrepreneur, an amazing woman and my inspiration.

Probably because of that story, and because I always see her sewing and embroidering things, fabric had a special meaning for me.

My mother learned from her mom, and she taught me and my sister how to sew. We are those kind of girls that can’t live with just one pair of pillows for more than 3 months, we need to make new ones all the time, just like my abuelita.

So, a few months ago I went to Mexico and saw my mom, she gave me a pair of hand embroidered pillow cases for the bedroom that my abuelita sent me. I cherish them, because when I see them it’s like I’m seeing these amazing women that I love so much and miss every day. When I heard that Orgullosa® launched a video series featuring four inspiring bicultural Latinas: Dascha Polanco (actress, OITNB), Jeannette Kaplun (founder, HispanaGlobal.com), Laura Gomez (tech entrepreneur) and María Teresa Kumar (President & CEO, Voto Latino), I couldn't help but think of my abuelita, my mother, my sister and how proud I am being part of their family and being able to share cool things, like craft tips!

My sister brought me this fabric from Mexico last time she visited me in California. I saw it the other day and knew exactly what I wanted to make with it into, new pillows!

This is a DIY envelope pillow cover project. The best part, you don’t need to sew anything which make it extra easy!

If you are planning on using this pillow a lot, and moving it from place to place you might need to follow the same steps but sew the sides instead of gluing it just because it will be more durable. If you are looking for an easy project for pillow covers that you might not use a lot, this idea is perfect for you.

MATERIALS:

  • Fabric for pillow covers

  • Scissors

  • Fabric glue

  • A pillow to place inside the pillow cover. I recycled an pillow that was a bit old.

How to make envelope pillow covers:

1. Start by measuring the fabric. Measure the pillow you are trying to cover and trace a big rectangle, big enough to cover the pillow completely when you fold it like in the picture below. Leave 4 inches extra on each side. Then cut this rectangle using your precious fabric.

2. Create the hems. To create a cleaner look, fold hems on the small sides of the rectangle.

3. Close the envelope pillow cover. Then fold the rectangle and glue each side. It will look like an envelope. Don’t worry if it’s an ugly and messy, soon you will turn over the pillow cover to hide all the glue and hems.

Now that is folded and glued together, the rectangle looks like a square, like the pictures below.

4. Turn the envelope pillow cover inside out. Let the glue dry for a few hours and when is ready, turn the pillow over! Now all the corners should look pretty and clean.

Now you are ready to start enjoying your new awesome pillow covers in your bedroom or living room!
