Halloween is almost here! Every year we create a Halloween costume for one of our dogs. We love the creative challenge of creating a costume, and our dogs love the attention that they receive when they are wearing a costume. We also have enjoyed participating in local festivals, and we hope this year we can win one of our local dog costume contests.

This is the costume that we created last year: How to Make a Unicorn Costume for your Dog. It has been so popular that had been featured in Woman's Day, Country Living and many other blogs and online magazines.

This year I wanted to make a costume that mix both of our favorite celebrations, Halloween, and Dia de los Muertos. That made us think of a unique animal that looks kind of cute but also kind of a tiny monster called mexican axolotl. We learned about these little creatures a few years ago when we were visiting Xochimilco in Mexico City with the family. We decided to take a tour and during the tour we learned a little about Xochimilco’s vegetation, its traditional culture, indigenous heritage, and these awesome endangered species, axolotls, that live just in that area. The word axolotl or ajolote comes from the Nahuatl axolotl, word that means "water monster". It is a very funny ugly animal, but that makes it incredibly adorable, especially if it inspires a costume for your dog this Halloween!

MATERIALS:

  • 1 meter of iridescent fabric (red or orange) similar to this one here

  • 1 meter of fringe. Similar to this one here

  • ½ meter double-sided velcro tape. Like this one here.

  • Thread

  • Sewing machine or needle for hand sewing

  • Ruler

  • Scissors

  • Kraft paper or paper for pattern making (to make the pattern)

  • 2 black buttons

  • Wadding

How to Make an Axolotl Costume for your Dog:

  1. Make a sewing pattern using kraft paper or pattern making paper and the exact measurements for your dog. You will need to measure the length of his torso to start drawing a pattern. In this tutorial, How to Make a Unicorn Costume for your Dog, you can see through pictures how we created our dog sewing pattern. You can also see how we made ours for the axolotl costume watching the video above in the minute 0:34.

  2. Place the sewing pattern on top of the fabric and cut the fabric pieces for the head and the body. Remember to fold the fabric so you cut both pieces at once. You can see more about how I place the sewing pattern and cut through the fabric in minute 2:45 in the video above.

  3. Sew the head of the Axolotl, place the fabric face to face and with the help of some sewing pins place the fringes inside next to the head ferns of the Axolotl. Watch minute 3:26 from the video above to see how I sew mine.

  4. Sew the rest of the body and connect it to the head. Turn the costume inside out.

  5. You can add some flaps in the tail like you can see in minute 4:12 in the video here.

  6. Fill the costume with wadding so is fluffy! The costume will end up looking like a flat axolotl but filled with wadding.

  7. Measure your doggie’s belly and neck and make some straps to be able to close down the costume. Add velcro in them and attach them to the sides of the costume. Watch minute 4:35 here.

  8. Add some black buttons on the head to make the axolotl eyes!

Your Axolotl costume for dogs is READY!

Now you have a costume for Halloween inspired by the cute creature from Xochimilco, the mexican axolotl :)
