How to Make Your Own Pom Pom Dress

Add color and personality to a boring plain dress with some colorful pompoms!

I wanted to start this summer with a white dress and I decided to make it from scratch because I really love the challenge and I enjoy making my own clothes.

The funny part is that it took me longer than I thought and when it was finally done, I discovered that it looked a bit plain and boring.  Luckily, I found some colorful pom poms in my drawer and thought they would give that dress the fun look and personality I was hoping for.

With the pom poms, the dress looks so much better. I wore it two days ago and loved how fun and quirky it looks, it definitely made me feel happy.

The great news is that adding the pom pots was actually pretty simple, so here is the tutorial so you can do it yourself too!

MATERIALS:

  • A basic cotton dress preferably in a solid color

  • Colorful 0.5 Inch Pom Poms. You could use bigger pompoms, something like 1 inch would look great too!

  • Needle and thread or glue gun if you don’t have a sewing machine

  • Scissors

  • Lace. I used about 4 meters to go all around the dress (about 157 inches)

How to Add Pom Poms to your Dress:

  1. Sew the pompoms to your dress. I used thread and a needle to sew the pompoms all around my dress one by one. I didn’t add them all together, I made groups of three and some individual pom poms in between leaving about 3cm (1.5inches) between each one because it was a lot of work! but you can put them closer if you have that extra time, and I’m sure it will be worth it. You could also use a hot glue gun, especially if this dress is for a specific event or party and you don’t care if they fall out later.

  2. Add some colorful furry lace for an extra colorful detail. You can also sew lace along the edge of your dress as a cute detail that complements the pompoms. It was a last minute idea but I definitely loved how they look together. This step is totally optional, but we think it adds something fun and makes the dress visually appealing. Make sure to look for some kind of lace in a similar texture than the pompoms, because the one we got almost look like tiny pom poms from far away. Can you see that too?

Clever and easy. Now you have a beautiful outfit full of colorful pompoms, how cool is that?
