How to Create a Watercolor Effect on Your Walls

How to create a watercolor effect with paint to decorate your home in a unique way.

The watercolor technique is very trendy and popular. I have seen many original ideas of art and illustrations that would look amazing framed on the walls, but have you ever imagined the same effect covering an entire wall?

I decided to paint some plywood panels creating a watercolor effect and to find out how they would look in my dining room area. The panels added a delicate touch to the walls, really fresh and carefree, in fact, they look like art.

They are a perfect idea for those renters who want to add more color to their homes but feel constrained because they can’t paint their walls. And the best part, you can take them with you when you move!

Here is how to create a watercolor effect on wood panels or simply create the texture directly on the walls of your home:

How to Create a Watercolor Effect on Your Walls:

1. Measure your walls. Make sure to have the measurements of your space so you can look for plywood panels to cover the surface you want to paint. I used three panels of 23.75 x 47.75 inches.

2. Paint the panels in a neutral color. I used Pure White (SW 7005) as the base for my plywood panels to make sure the other color I’ll add later stands out.

3. Get ready to start painting with containers. Before you start creating the watercolor effect, you're going to need two plastic or glass containers. Pour paint in one of them and fill the other with water.

4. Create the watercolor effect on your walls. Start by applying the paint directly on the panels using a brush.

Submerge the brush into the container with water and press the wet brush against the panel again. The paint will start to wash out.

I added a little extra water and allowed it to drip. I love the fun pattern of lines across the panels.

6.  Let the paint dry for a couple of hours.

When your panels are completely dry, place them on your walls as decoration, leaning them or hanging them using some nails.

You can definitely create this same effect directly on your walls. To achieve the effect on your walls just follow steps 3, 4, 5 and 6.

The key is to apply the paint directly on the wall and not let it dry. Soak the brush right away and press the brush to the wall to start washing out the color. Continue until you get the desired pattern.

You can apply more paint or more water depending on the effect you want to achieve. Have fun with the process and don’t forget to add lost of protective plastic in your floors because the effect looks cool but it’s quite messy.

Enjoy a fresh and carefree style in your space!
