When I was a kid, all I wanted to play with was polly pocket houses and play dough. I loved using the play dough to create extra props for my polly pocket city. I used to make trees, sofas, cars and all of sorts of cute and silly things. However, my oldest boy didn’t seem that interested in play dough at the beginning. I bought him a few Play Doh bottles a few months ago, but he just didn’t know what to do with it, and then, our poodle started eating the play dough, so I had to threw it away.

Then last summer, a friend sent me a homemade play dough recipe that she found on Pinterest. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be an interesting activity for my toddler, but I wanted to try. So we planned a playdate and we tried the recipe in my house. It was a fun playdate activity and the kids actually enjoyed helping us knead the mixture and add the drops of food coloring.

This is a perfect activity for the upcoming cold days of fall and winter and any other days when you are looking for ideas to entertain the kids indoors. You can make just a one batch in one color in a few minutes, or make two or three batches with the recipe and create various colors, and extend the fun for hours! (Check out the tip I shared below, we tried to double the ingredients once and it didn’t work out)

As soon as you memorize the recipe and the process, it will be so easy to make this soft homemade play dough any time you need some entertainment.

We found the recipe at How Does She and it ended up super fluffy and soft. We approve and love!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 cup flour

  • 1/4 cup salt

  • 2 tsp cream of tartar

  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

  • 10 drops of food coloring (add more for more vibrant colors)

NOTE: We tried to double all the ingredients to make a bigger batch of mix at the same time, but the result wasn’t great. We tried again with the exact measurements from the recipe, making three different batches, each one in a different color and the play dough ended up perfect.

STEPS:

  1. Add all the ingredients mentioned above into a pot and stir them until blended together.

  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it forms a large ball.

  3. As soon as it joins into one large ball, take it off the heat and dump it onto your counter or wax paper.

  4. Wait for the mixture to cool for a few minutes, then knead it a few times until it becomes super soft.

  5. Store it in plastic containers or a plastic ziploc bag. It will last you for a couple of days if store properly.
