How to Make Felted Fruit Ornaments

Let’s make some charming and timeless felted fruit ornaments to decorate your house this holiday season.

We found a beautiful garland with figs and citrus fruits at the store called Anthropologie and we fell in love with it, but it was very expensive!

Instead, we thought that we could recreate the same idea, with similar colors and using materials that were easy to find and not too expensive, that way we could make more ornaments and use them to create a wreath and also as decorations in the christmas tree.

We created our version of a grapefruit and a fig, and they turned out adorable! So we will share with you the full tutorial for each one of those fruits.

There is a video we shared in YouTube channel that might be helpful below. The video is just in Spanish, but it can guide you if you feel lost in any of the steps.

The material we ended up using was felt, canvas fabric, green pipe cleaners, a piece of purple fabric (optional) and golden beads. Check out the list and recommendations below :)

  • Purple felt and magenta felt. Make sure you read the details in the description if you are buying online, because you need thick felt but also soft felt, to create the shapes easily, like these ones here.

  • Canvas fabric for the center of the ornaments

  • Green pipe cleaners (optional) for the leaves of the fruit

  • Golden beads. I used tube seed beads for the center of the ornament, like the ones you see in the package here.

  • Sewing scissors

  • Fabric glue. Here is one we love lately because it’s so durable.

  • Batting or pillow filling

How to make felted grapefruit ornaments:

Here is the video link if you need extra help with any of the steps: Felted fruit ornaments DIY

1. Create the shape of the grapefruit. Cut two circles of about 4 inches in diameter out of magenta felt to make the front and back of the felted grapefruit MIN 0:23

2. Create the center of the grapefruit. Cut one circle using the canvas fabric that measures about 3 inches in diameter. MIN 0:46

3. Create the grapefruit segments. You also need to cut some shapes that will be the segment of the grapefruit, but look like seeds or flower petals using the same magenta felt fabric. I used a different fabric in the tutorial because I wanted to add another texture, but it’s totally optional. You can definitely use the same felt and it will look great too MIN 0:50

4. Glue all the pieces. Glue all the pieces and create the grapefruit. The center made out of canvas fabric goes on top of the big magenta circle and then the segments of the grapefruit that are magenta too, go on top of the canvas fabric and the center of everything else. MIN 1:00

5. Add some sparkly seeds. Add some seeds using the tube seed beads in gold as a special detail MIN 1:45

6. Close your grapefruit ornament. Sew the ornaments together and facing the pretty sides of the circle together leaving an opening of about 2 inches so you can then turn them inside out. MIN 2:35

7. Fill your grapefruit ornament. Use batting or pillow filling to fill your grapefruit ornament so it looks fluffy and close your felt ornament completely MIN 3:14

8. Create the leaves of your orange ornament with pipe cleaners (optional) MIN 3:38

How to make felted figs ornaments:

Here is the video link if you need extra help with any of the steps: Felted fruit ornaments DIY

1. Create the fig shape. Cut two pieces of purple felt in a shape of a fig to start your fig ornament. MIN 5:31

2. Create the center of the fig. Recreate the same shape of the fig but making it like a little bit smaller using the canvas fabric. Then cut a second fig shape a bit smaller than the canvas fabric one using purple felt again. At the end you should have four fig shapes, two big purple felt ones, a medium one with the canvas fabric and the smallest one with purple felt again. MIN 06:00

3. Decorate your fig ornament. Add some tube seed beads in gold as a special detail in the center of your fig MIN 6:54

4. Sew your fig ornaments. Sew the ornaments together and facing the pretty sides of the fig shape together leaving an opening of about 2 inches so you can then turn them inside out MIN 7:50

5. Fill your botanical ornaments. Use batting or pillow filling to fill your fig felted ornament so it looks fluffy. Then close the felt ornament completely using thread and a needle. MIN 8:16

Enjoy these timeless and charming ornaments! You can follow this idea and create more fruits, like for example, make a wreath out of citrus fruits like lemon, oranges, grapefuit, etc using different colors of felt!
